Q. I am a missionary with a religious work (D-6) visa. I’d like to continue my religious work while teaching in college (E-1 visa).  Do I have to change my visa status?



 No. You can perform activities other than those corresponding to the current visa status if you get a permit. Article 20 of the Immigration Act  What is a permit for activities other than the status of sojourn?   It is a permit granted to a foreigner residing in Korea who wants to perform activities falling to a different status of sojourn concurrently with those corresponding to his/her current status of sojourn.



The “application period” and “application method” are the following: When is the application period?  You must get a permit before performing activities other than those corresponding to the current visa status. Article 20 of the Immigration Act What is the application method?  You should submit an application  for a permit for activities other than the status of sojourn to the head of the competent district office or the head of the competent local branch by attaching the documents required for the relevant visa status. Article 25 (1) of the Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act



Q. What if the activities that I am willing to do are my major activities, such as full-time work, so a permit for activities other than the status of sojourn is not granted?  In such a case, you should exit and re-enter Korea after being issued a new visa or get a permit for a change of visa status.  Articles 7 and 21(1) of the Immigration Act
